Faculty Overview:
The Faculty of Russian celebrated its 25th Anniversary at University of Foreign Language Studies in Oct 2010. The anniversary was a milestone for academic staff at the faculty to celebrate the faculty foundation and development.

On 14th April 1985, Danang Foreign Language Teacher Training College was established in accordance with Decision No. 395B/QĐ by the Ministry of Education with the aims of training high quality teacher graduates in Central Vietnam and Highland. The first two departments of English and Russian were founded and then they started offering teacher training programs of English and Russian at different academic levels with its increasing academic affairs, admission and high quality training programs. All these attempts have brought several positive benefits to the social and economic development in the region. Russian has been taught at University of Polytechnics, Division of Economics, and QN-DN College of Teacher Education.

In an attempt to restructure and rearrange some major national universities, the University of Danang (UD) was established in accordance with Decree No. 32/CP by the Government dated 4th April 1994, which is known as a multidisciplinary regional university and a major training and scientific research center in Vietnam. The Faculty of Russian and other foreign language faculties were then merged with University of Education.

- University of Foreign Language Studies was founded in accordance with Decision No. 709/QD-TTG by the Government on 26th August 2002, on the basis of partitioning with University of Education. Although the University had encountered a number of difficulties in infrastructure, it managed to give support to the Russian Faculty and other faculties for their development.

- After 35 years of teaching Russian and 25 years of development, the Faculty of Russian has made progress in training missions with an excellent teaching and academic staff of 25 members (4 Ph.D, 1 Ph.D. candidate, 16 masters, 4 bachelors; 20/23 dual degree holders).

- Throughout over 30- year teaching practices, the faculty has trained nearly 2000 students who have been successfully working in various fields nationwide. However the faculty has experienced ups and downs over the time. In 1990s the dramatic political changes in Soviet Union and Eastern Europe had great impact on the teaching and learning practices of Russian in many language centers in our country. From the top favourite language in Vietnam, Russian gradually became optional subjects and then was put out of secondary and high school educational system. At present only a few of schools have offered Russian training courses. This caused big difficulties and challenges to the faculty enrollments. In early 2000s Russian started gaining its popularity due to the fact that Russia had again invested in Dung Quat Oil Refinery. The numbers of enrollments increased quickly and peaked in 2002-2003. But later Russia had withdrawn from the project, which resulted in the drop of enrollments in the faculty. The incident proves that today learners always care about the social demand when they choose career-related majors at tertiary level.

- In recent years, the job market of Russian has turned to green light, especially in tourism due to the fast-growing number of Russian visitors. Since 2005, more and more graduate students of Russian have been employed and worked as Russian translators, interpreters, tour guides, travel agents, hotel workers, and so on in many well-known tourist cities such as Danang, Hoi An, Nha Trang and Phan Thiet, Mui Ne. In catching up with this market demand, the Faculty has managed to equip learners with knowledge Russian language and culture, organized more extracurricular activities for learners to experience real communications, encouraged them to travel to tourist destinations in the regions and recommended them for internships at travel agencies and hotels in Hoi An, Danang city, or Phan thiet – Mui ne. A great number of 4-year students in the faculty have been offered good jobs. In a short time, with the support of Russian government, the national nuclear power project which is on the move in Ninh Thuan will be a driving force for recovering the Russian teaching practices in the whole nation in general and in Danang, in particular.
