On 20 January, 2017, the Labor Union of University of Foreign Language Studies, the Universiy of Da nang (UFLS-UD) visited and offered gifts to people from the ethnic group in Hong Thuy mountainous region (A Luoi district, Thua Thien Hue province)

Dr. Nguyen Duc Hung - Chairman of UD’s Labor Union, Ms. Pham Thi Thu Huong - Chairwoman of the UFLS’ Labor Union, Mr. Po Loong Phuong - an official from the Vietnamese Fatherland Front of A Luoi District, together with other lecturers and students, came to give presents to the local people.

Hong Thuy Ward (belonging to A Luoi mountainous district, Thua Thien Hue Province) is an extremely poor ward which is home to five ethnic groups, 85% of which are from the Paco ethnic group.

These people’s lives have begun to change significantly. However, 35% are poor households and the people there are still facing adverse circumstances. They live mainly on farming, specifically on corn and cassava which have a low economic value.

Sharing the difficulties faced by the people of Hong Thuy Ward, Dr. Nguyen Duc Hung, Chairman of UD’s Labor Union expressed his concerns, the Tet gifts for the local people are shared with sincerity by all UFLS-UD staff with the ethnic groups for the New Year of the Rooster 2017. It is hoped the gifts will encourage the local people to overcome their challenges and make greater attempts to stabilize their conditions and take good care of their children.

The gifts represented not only the sharing but also the responsibility towards the community of the UFLS staff.

According to Ms Pham Thi Thu Huong, the visit is one of UFLS Labor Union’s annual activities. For the Tet of the Rooster 2017, 50 gifts, worth 500.000VND each, were offered to the people from various ethnic groups in the hope of bringing them a happier Tet holiday.

On behalf of the people from Hong Thuy ward, Mr. Po Loong Phuong cheerfully said: “We are truly touched by the UFLS’ sincerity of the university’s staff who didn’t mind travelling more than 300 kilometres of bumpy mountainous roads to visit us during the final days of winter.

The gifts not only had a practical meaning but also helped encourage people from poor areas when the Tet holiday came.
