The First TESOL Symposium held in Vietnam

The International Symposium on Teaching English as a Foreign Language was hosted at University of Foreign Language Studies - The University of Da Nang (UFLS-UD) on July 28 & 29, 2015. This TESOL symposium was the first of its kind in Viet Nam.
Assigned by the National Foreign Languages 2020 Project, University of Foreign Language Studies – the University of Da Nang, in partnership with TESOL International Association, organized the International TESOL Symposium 2015. This symposium provides a unique opportunity for primary and secondary English language teacher candidates, classroom practitioners, universities professors, lecturers, and other interested faculty to talk about English language teaching innovation, implementation, and sustainability.
Attending the symposium were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Sy Thu - Executive Director of the National Foreign Languages 2020 Project, Dr. Vu Thi Tu Anh - Deputy Executive Director of the National Foreign Languages 2020 Project, Mr. Terry White - Counselor for Public Affairs of the U.S Embassy to Viet Nam, Dr. Andy Curtis - President of TESOL International Association, Dr. Rosa Aronson - Executive Director of TESOL International Association, Dr. Tran Huu Phuc - Rector of University of Foreign Language Studies, the University of Da Nang, representatives from the University of Da Nang, and relevant agencies.
The event also attracted more than 400 participants from Viet Nam and around the world.

In the opening ceremony, Dr. Tran Huu Phuc - Rector of University of Foreign Language Studies, the University of Da Nang delivered his welcome speech in which he expressed his great honor to host the special event and welcomed all the guests and participants to the TESOL Symposium 2015.
He said: “As one of the largest centers of foreign language and cultural studies in Viet Nam, University of Foreign Language Studies, the University of Da Nang has effectively carried out the mission of enhancing the knowledge of linguistics and human culture in order to serve the national construction and development as well as to promote international cooperation. With that in mind, over the last years, as part of our tremendous attempts to improve language teaching and learning quality, we have been increasingly focused on hosting a number of academic conferences and symposia at various scales in order to bring together professionals and experts to exchange knowledge and ideas in the field of language teaching and learning….Under the guidance of the Management Board of the National Foreign Language 2020 Project and in cooperation with the TESOL International Association, the University of Foreign Language Studies is proud to host this international symposium on Teaching English as a Foreign Language. We offer you not only insightful and stimulating presentations but also a congenial atmosphere for academic discussions.”
Dr. Tran Huu Phuc expressed his gratitude to the Management Board of Vietnam’s National Foreign Languages 2020 Project for contributing the grants and efforts during the one-year symposium preparation and his appreciation towards TESOL International Association for co-organizing the event.

At the end of his speech, Dr. Tran Huu Phuc gave special thanks to the keynote speakers and the moderators in charge of the symposium sessions for taking time and efforts to share their expertise and vision at this event. He also expressed his special thanks to special guests and participants.

With the aim to increase language proficiencies for students and teachers, the 2-day symposium received high appreciation from special guests and participants.
